Effects of Cannabis

The effect that cannabis has on the body depends on the person, the type of cannabis, and how much is used. Combining cannabis with other substances (like alcohol and other drugs) also causes different reactions.

The short-term effects of cannabis may include any of the following:

  • Happy feelings and relaxation
  • Anxiety or paranoid thoughts
  • Hallucinations and psychosis
  • Sleepiness
  • Forgetfulness
  • Problems with paying attention and thinking clearly
  • Increased appetite
  • Increased heart rate
  • Impaired co-ordination and balance
  • Slow reaction times and difficulty focusing on more than one thing (e.g., while driving a vehicle)
  • Dry mouth and throat
